good copywriting
Many people reckon they can do their own copywriting. But it’s not that easy. Can you do all this?
- Write from your audience’s point of view, bearing in mind they would rather suck worms than read your copy.
- Write headlines that reach your audience and offer a USP (Unique Selling Point).
- Decide on a USP, when you can’t even find one down the back of the sofa.
- Pare every sentence to the bone, taking out every redundant word, so that only the message remains, gleaming like a medal in a velvet-lined box.
- Write about benefits, not features.
- Nail every comma. Identify a run-on sentence. Spot a ‘series out-of-control’. Remove every dangling modifier. Get your verbs to agree. Use ‘that’ and ‘which’ correctly.
- Talk to your audience as human beings, using short, gutsy words and short sentences. Increase understanding, increase sales.
- When writing PR, instantly identify the news, and put it all in the right order.
- Never, ever, under any circumstances, describe a window as a ‘glazed vision panel’.
